Clinique revamps its top-selling Dramatically Different moisturizer.
August 12, 2013

It took three formulating dermatologists, 53 researchers, and 100 formula trials to get Clinique’s new Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion + just right, according to Estée Lauder. This first dermatologist-developed moisturizer in the US is making news again, as this “new and improved” formulation hits stores in August. According to Clinique, this iconic lotion has been dermatologist-reformulated to deliver even more dramatically different results, with double the moisturization levels for comfortably hydrated skin all day without an extra drop of oil. In trials, 54% of users said that they saw improvement in skin’s barrier strength in eight weeks without changing the famously silky texture too. Why change something that millions of people love and rely on daily as part of Clinique’s renowned 3-Step Skin Care System? “The world has changed. Skin care technology has changed. And so we have changed,” said Janet Pardo, Clinique’s senior vice president of global product development. “Clinique is consistently researching new ingredients and technology to modernize its products and ensure clients receive the maximum benefits. Now more than ever, skin needs extra help.” Clinique scientists worked closely with Clinique’s guiding dermatologists Dr. David and Dr. Catherine Orentreich, the son and daughter of the celebrated dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich, who worked with magazine editor Carol Phillips and the Lauder family to develop Clinique in 1968. Today, the Orentreichs run the Orentreich Medical Group in the same Fifth Avenue offices that their father practiced. “The Orentreichs see patients of all ethnicities, skin concerns, skin types and ages from around the world. Patients were coming in more and more with manifestations they described as redness, itching, burning, breakouts, dryness, dullness…in other words; unhealthy skin. The dermatologists attribute these symptoms to one thing: a weakened barrier,” noted Pardo. According to the company, the new formula underwent extensive sensory testing—the biggest in Clinique history. More than 1,600 women of different ethnicities across five countries participated including existing, lapsed and new users. Currently, skin care users are craving skin care SKUs that fit a variety of needs too. “The facial skin care category is expected to see an uptick in growth thanks to improving economic conditions and emerging segments,” said Shannon Romanowski, beauty and personal care analyst at Mintel. “Consumers are gravitating toward multifunctional products that allow them to get more benefits while saving them both time and money.” In order to accomplish its dual mission—to provide barrier strength and to boost the moisturizing power, Clinique paired new formulating technology with ingredients that have a dermatological heritage for efficacy and comfort, said Pardo. When the original Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion was developed, Dr. Norman Orentreich insisted on using ingredients that work optimally with the skin. Today, Dr. David and Dr. Catherine Orentreich continue to advise using ingredients familiar to the skin because these are effective and are least likely to provoke irritation. The Barrier Repair Complex includes a blend of sunflower seed cake, barley extract and cucumber extract that helps to strengthen the skin’s barrier, imparting resilience and resistance to environmental stresses. New moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and urea round out the formulation. “You can have the best moisturizer in the world but if your barrier is not intact moisture evaporates,” said Pardo. “The two actions, moisturizing and barrier repair, go hand in hand.” More info: www.clinique.com
